Student Leaders Challenged to Implement Positive Change in Local Schools

Posted: 8/6/2015

Charged with empowering students through resiliency under Governor Kasich’s StartTalking! Grant, the Summit County Educational Service Center recently hosted the 10th annual Leadership Conference – Student Coalition for Positive and Safe Schools. The conference was designed to empower students to stand up for what’s right, when it’s right and demonstrate the influence they have in order to effect positive change in their schools and beyond.

More than 280 students in grades six through 11 throughout Summit County attended the conference at the Sheraton Suites earlier this summer. Students who attended were identified as exceptional leaders in their respective schools by school administrators. During the conference, they were exposed to national and local motivational speakers and attended various breakout sessions. The message encouraged students to understand and have a cause bigger than the individual.

Guest speakers included Mark Scharenbroich, an Emmy Award winner, National Speakers Hall of Fame member, motivational coach and author of Nice Bike – Making Meaningful Connections on the Road of Life. He spoke to students about making the most of their school experiences by being fully engaged and involved.

Scharenbroich’s introductory remarks included, “When you are done today you will take some of what you learned back to your schools to implement for a positive climate.” Additionally, his message emboldened students to define who they are through leadership and use their gifts to benefit others.

Motivational speaker and musician Chris Milo also spoke to students about the 13 messages from Milo, based on character counts. He inspired students to be true to themselves and addressed how the various impact acts of kindness, as well as jealousy, can positively or negatively have on others.
