New assessment item type for state social studies tests

A new assessment item type, the Evidence-Based Set (EBS), is being added to the American history and American government state tests and will eventually be added to the fourth and sixth grade social studies tests. An Evidence-Based Set is a group of several questions associated to one or more common stimuli. It allows students to work with primary source materials to show deep understanding of social studies topics. The questions in these sets will assess a range of skills and content in the content statements. Check for a sample EBS item in the Student Practice Site portal for the American History EOY.

Additional practice materials and revised test specs posted

New materials for teachers of students who will take state tests this year in English language arts, science and social studies will soon be available. These include additional Student Practice Resources in several areas and updated test specification documents for science and social studies in all tested grades and courses. The department has updated the science and social studies specifications from last year to reflect that districts will administer the 2016 tests in two parts within one testing window.

Keep in mind that this school year, all tests are constructed under the original blueprints. There is one window for the two parts of the test to be administered. Part one is essentially the PBA that covers identified content statements. Part two covers the entire year and all of the content statements identified in the test blue prints. The test specifications and blueprints for the subsequent years changes this format.
