Substitute Teaching in Summit County requires a 4-year degree in any subject area, along with the following 9 items:
|
1.
|
Substitute Orientations
Required attendance at one of the Substitute Orientations held at our office in room 17/19. (Sessions may run longer than the allotted 2 hours based on the number in attendance.)
- September 4, 2008 1-3pm
- January 7, 2009 1-3pm
- May 13, 2009 1-3pm
Please note that substitute lists for the districts are published only three times per year, after each Orientation. It is highly recommended that you turn in all completed requirements at an Orientation, as you will not be included on the current sub list if your information is incomplete.
If you need to apply for a substitute license (see item #5), you may send in your Long Term/Short Term sub license application, along with your final, completed transcripts (see item #4) and check for the licensing fee of $25 or $125, payable to OHIO TEC six weeks prior to attending a scheduled Orientation. This will allow your license to process approximately the same time you are attending an Orientation session and be included on the most current sub list.
You will NOT be able to substitute teach until you receive your valid, unexpired license from the Ohio Department of Education or provide passing Praxis I and/or II scores or provide a Letter of Completion from your university (see item #5), as well completing the other eight requirements.

Current, Unexpired Teaching License:
You will NOT be able to substitute teach until you receive your valid, unexpired license from the Ohio Department of Education or provide passing Praxis I and/or II scores or provide a Letter of Completion from your university, as well completing the other eight requirements, including attending an Orientation session (see item #1).
- Unexpired Long or Short Term Substitute License
Those who need to apply for a sub license include ALL non-education majors, education majors not applying for licensure, and education majors not passing Praxis I and/or II. Normal processing time is 4-6 weeks during the school year and 6-12 weeks during summer months. You are encouraged to send in your application, transcripts and the check or money order for $25 or $125 six weeks prior to attending a scheduled Orientation. This will allow your license to process approximately the same time you are attending an Orientation session and be included on the most current sub list.
Applications for the Substitute License (Long/Short Term) can be downloaded HERE. You may also request the Substitute License application to be sent from our office. Either way, the application must be returned to our office to be signed by the Summit County Superintendent.
- For May/December graduates in Education with Licensure:
Submit copies of your Passing Praxis I and/or II scores OR submit a copy of your Letter of Completion from your college/university (Praxis I and/or II must be passed in order to receive.)

Important Notice
|
|
Barberton, Copley, Norton, Stow, Tallmadge, as well as Akron and Cuyahoga Falls, require substitutes to contact them directly and not necessarily go thru our office for credentialing.
The Summit County ESC only processes the paperwork and credentials for Substitute teachers and distributes the Summit County Certified Substitute List. It is up to the districts we serve to call and/or hire substitutes from the List provided.
