Posted: 9/29/2014
September 19, 2014—Summit County Educational Service Center (ESC) administrators recently visited the Ohio Statehouse and talked with U.S. Representative Marilyn Slaby and State of Ohio Superintendent of Public Instruction, Dr. Richard Ross about funding needs and challenges facing Educational Service Centers.
“Any time our legislators are interested in hearing about the role we play in supporting our children, we are happy to talk about how we can continue to advance our work in order to serve our students. Education as a whole is facing new challenges as we speak, and we believe it is important to continue to remind our leaders the vital role that ESCs play in supporting our children and our districts,” said Summit County ESC
Superintendent Linda Fuline.
Among the topics discussed were the third-grade reading guarantee, growing teacher responsibilities and consideration of instruction time throughout the year.
Some of the services ESCs provide to students in local school districts include:
- In-service training
for teachers
- Professional
development
- Student programs
- Community partnerships
- Special education
services
- Extended School Year
Programs
- Professional
Learning Communities
- School Nursing Program
- Substitute Teacher Ad and Licensure
- Homeschool support
- And More
ESCs also implement state or federally funded initiatives assigned to the service centers by the General Assembly or the Ohio Department of Education.
ESCs were established in 1914 through an act of the Ohio General Assembly. By law they are charged with “elevating the state’s system of education to a proper standard.” For more information about the Summit County ESC, visit www.cybersummit.org or call 330.945.5600.
